Automatic to Auxiliary.

Automatic

chiefly derived from airfoils rotated about an approximately vertical axis by aerodynamic forces, and in which the lift on opposite sides of the plane of symmetry is equalized by the vertical oscillation of the blades.
Automatic. Self-regulating or selfadjusting. A movement is automatic when it is effected without the direct intervention of the hand.
Automatic center punch. (Mach.) A center punch so constructed that, when pressure is applied, a springcontrolled hammer contained within the handle is released with sufficient force to cause the point to leave its mark on metal.
Automatic choke (Auto. Mech.). An electrically controlled device by which the choke is automatically operated on starting the car.
Automatic circuit breaker. (Elec.)An automatic device for breaking the circuit when the strength of current exceeds a predetermined proper limit.
Automatic clutch. (Auto. Mech.) A clutch operated by vacuum from the intake manifold and controlled by the accelerator pedal.
Automatic cutout. (Elec.) An electri- .
cal adjustment for automatically removing any electrical part or connection from a circuit at the proper moment.
Automatic Gain Control (AGC). Circuit function in radio receiver designed to maintain amplitude of IF signal fed to demodulator at a more-or-Iess constant level over awide range of antenna input voltages. Sometimes applied to tape recorders with automatic compression.
Automatic Image Stabilizer. A camcorder servo mechanism that floats the lens to help compensate for camera movement.
Automatic Level Control (ALC). A circuit which automatically keeps the level of a signal within a certain range. Examples: automatic gain control in Am radios; ALC in portable tape, recorders.
Automatic Light Control (ALC)~ Vidicon ca.mera control which automatically adjusts the target voltage to compensate for variations in light levels.
Automatic pilot. (Aero.) A group of units which, when combined electrically and mechanically, form a system capable of automatically controlling the flight of an aircraft.
Automatic propeUer. (Aero.) A propeller whose blades are attached to a mechanism that automatically sets them at their optimum pitch for various flight conditions.
Automatic record changer. Record player which can change from disc to disc automatically. A~tomatic screw machine. A machine for the rapid and accurate' production of small parts such as screws, bolts, bushings, etc. Material in the form of a bar is fed into position to permit the necessary machining operations. After being "set up;' its operation is .automatic.

Automatic shift. (Auto. Mech.) A

Automatic spark control to Auxiliary
transmission-gear control by which gears are shifted from one speed to another usually by simply depressing the clutch pedal.
Automatic spark control. (Auto. Mech.) A governor controlled either by vacuum, electrical, or mechanical means by which a spark to each cylinder is properly timed.
Automatic stability. (Aero.) Stability dependent upon movable control surfaces automatically operated.
Automatic switch. (Elec.) A switch which opens and closes by itself at required times.
Automatic telephone. (Elec.) A type of telephone which permits the completion of a connection by means of automatic switches without the assistance of an operator.
Automation. An industrial technique of mass production using self-directing, self-correcting, self-evaluating machines as a replacement for human. effort.
Automaton. Any device or mechanism which automaticalIy imitates the actions of the living. .
Auto mechanics. The practical science of repair and maintenance of automobiles.
Automobile. A vehicle propelled by steam gasoline; or electrical power. The term, as generalIy used, includes pleasure and business cars, ddivery cars, and trucks.
Automobile battery. (Auto. E/ec.) A storage battery used to operate the starting and lighting systems of an
'automobile or to supply the current for an elcctricalIy operated vehicle.
Automotive engineer. One skilled in the design, construction. and development of the automobile. Technically, the term might be extended to cover mechanically propelled mediums generally.
Autoplate. (Print.) A machine which casts, shaves, trims, and delivers curved stereotype printing plates ready for use.
Autopulse magnetic fuel pump. (Auto. Mech.) An electrically operated device for maintaining the gasoline level in the carburetor.
Auto transformer. (Elec.) A variable compensator in which a choking coil is introduced across the alternating-current supply circuits so that the varying currents can be obtained from different points on its windings. A single-coil transformer tapped to provide primary and secondary. .
Auxiliary. Giving or furnishing aid or support, generally in a subordinate or secondary manner; supplementary; as an auxiliary view
in drawing. .
