Compatible. Usable is more than one
format. A stereo recordinl! or broadcast which produces mono on mono equipment is "mono compatible". A computer program that can be used on more than one type of computer or a videodisc or cassette that can be used on more than one piece of hardware is also said to be compatible. Note that although the three video formats. VHS, Beta and V 2000 all use tape the same width (12.5 mm) the cassettes are different and the formats are incompatible.
Compatible colour. A TV broadcast system which produces a colour signal that can be received by either a black and white or colour set. The luminance values (the basis of colour reception) are broadcast as different portions of the total signal so that the luminance values are not dependent on the Chrominance valuesfor reproduction.
Compendium. An abridged edition which summarizes the subjects
Compensated pendulum. A pendulum made of two materials which.
h~lVe different coefficients of expansion and are so chosen that the length of the pendulum remains constant when the temperature varies.
Compensated wattmeter. (Elec.) A wattmeter which has a compensat- I ing coil connected in series with the I
potential coil for the purpose of correcting the error caused by the absorption of power due to mechanical operation of the potential coil.
Compensating. (E/ec.) A coil which serves to compensate for the mechanical friction in the moving coil of a meter.
Compensator. (E/ec.) An auto transformer with a switching mechanism for starting large alternatingcurrent induction motors.
Complementary angles. (Math.) Two angles which, added together, equal 90 deg.

Component board. Rigid board car
.rying components in electronic equipment. Usually with printed circuit on one side and components on reverse.
Component system. An audio system consisting of separate units: turntable, tuner, amplifier, speakers"etc.
