Controlcable to Cope


Controlcable. (Aero.) The line of wire or stranded cable interconnect­ing or leading from the control le­vers to the control surfaces.
Control coiumn. (Aero.) A lever having a rotatable wheel mounted at its upper end for operating the longitudinal and lateral control surfaces of an airplane. This type of control is called "wheel control."
ControlIability. (Aero.) The quality in an airplane which makes it pos­sible for the pilot to change its alti­ tude easily and with the exertion of but little force.
Controllable propeller. (Aero.) A propeller whose blades are so mounted that the pitch may be changed while the propeller is ro­tating.
Controller. (Elec.) A magnetic de­vice for the automatic regulation and control of an electric current.
Control stick. (Aero.) The vertical le­ver which operates the lateral and longitudinal controls of an airplane. Pitching is controlled by a fore-and­aft movement of the stick rolling, by a side-to-side movement.
Control surface. (Aero.) A movable airfoil, the position of which may be altered by the pilot in order to change the altitude of the airplane.
Controls. (Aero.) Relates to the pro­vision made for the control of power, speed, direction, and alti­tude of an aircraft.
Control system. (Auto.) Cunsists ,,1' steering device, throttle and spark control, brake levers, gear-shift lever, foot pedals, and the brake system.

Convection. (Elec.) The flow of elec­tricity by the motion of charged par­ticles of air passing off currents from a pointed electrical conductor, (phys.) Diffusion of heat through a liquid or gas by motion of its parts.
Convector. (Meek Engin.) A type of heating unit, for steam or hot water heating, fitted with large extended fire surfaces which emit heat prin­cipally by convection.
Convenience outlet. (Elec.) A point on the wiring system at which cur­rent is taken to supply portable ap­pliances such as irons, toasters, etc.
Conventional. (Fine Art~) Repre­sented according to artistic conven­
tion or rule, rather than to nature of fact. Resulting from, or established by custom; formal.
Converge. To tend to meet in a point or line.
With loud-speakers, percentage of electrical input available fis acous­tic output.
. Converter. Also called transformer. (Elec.) A machine employing me­chanical rotation in changing elec­trical energy from one form to an­other.
Convertible.. (Auto Mech.) A passenger-type automobile with top that can be completely removed or top which can be lowered or raised either manually or by an electrically operated hydraulic system.

Convex. Curving like the surface of a sphere.
Convey. To impart; to communicate; to transport.
Conveyors. Such devices as an end­ less belt, or chain with buckets at­tached for transferring material.
Convolute. Rolled or wound together, one part upon another.
Coolant. (Metal Fin.) A liquid used to dissipate the heat generated by a cutting tool. Coolants most fre­quently used for soda water, lard oil, kerosene, and turpentine, or combi­nations of these.

Cooling fixture. (Plast.) Block of metal or wood, holding the shape of a molded casting, which is used to maintain the proper shape or dimensional accuracy of a casting after it has been removed from the mold, until it is cool enough to retain its shape without further appreciable distortion.
Cooling system. (Auto.) Those devices which prevent the overheating of the engine by rapidly carrying off the heat generated by combustion. Radiators, fans, pump and water jackets are parts of a water-cooling system.
Coopered joint. (Furn.) Joint resem­bling those made in barrels, used in curved parts.
Coordinate. (Math.) A member of a system of lines by means of which position is determined.
Copal camish. Varnish of which copal is a principal ingredient. Copal is a hard transparent resin obtained from tropical trees; also taken from the earth.
Cope. The upper portion of a loam mold, or the top flask used in green sand molding.
