Coped joint. (Arch.) A joint between molded pieces in which a portion of one member is cut out to receive. the molded part of the other mem­ber.
Coping. (Arch.) The cap or top course of a wall, frequently pro­jecting. .
Coping machine. (Shopwk.) Used for cutting away the flanges and comers of beams and bending the ends.
Coping out. (Fdry.) The cutting away of the sand face in the drag half of the mold to bring it to the proper parting line. For any de­pression thus made, there is a cor­responding projection of sand from the face of the cope.
Coping saw. (Woodwk.) Consists of
a narrow blade, 1/8 in. wide 6~ in. long, carried on pins set in a steel bow frame. Used for cutting curves; coping out molding, etc.
Copolymer. (Plast.) Product formed by the simultaneous polymeriza­tion of two or more substances; it
is not a mixture of separate poly­mers, but a complex, having prop­erties different from either polymer alone.
Copolymerization. (Chern. Plast.) When two or more. monomers are involved in a chemical reaction which links their molecules to­gether to form large molecules. (See Polymerization).
Copper. A metal, soft, ductile, and malleable, much used in the arts; tough, but not strong; of great. Copperas. (Chern.) FeS04.7HzO. (See Green vitriol).
Copper bit. (Plumb.) A tool used for soldering. Usually called a "solder­ing iron."
Copper gasket. (Auto. Elec.) Any cop­per or copper and asbestos ring or sheet used to seal two metal faces which are bolted or fastened to­gether.
Copper lead. (Metal.) An alloy bear­ing metal; more effective than babbitt in withstanding high load pressures and high temperatures.
Copper pipe. (Plumb:) Size rated by either inside or outside diameters; thickness of wall is measured by Stub's wire gauge. Much used in plumbing and in the industries.
Copper-plate. (Print.) An intaglio process of engraving by cutting or biting into copper. The plate is inked, wiped, and then printed with consid­erable pressure.
Copper-plating. The depositing of a copper coating on the surface of an­other metal by anyone of several for­ mulas, the principal ingredient of
which is cyanide of potassium. The plating is accomplished both by the dipping and the electrolytic method.

Copper steel. Steel of low carbon, containmg about 0.25 per cent cop­per, used for construction work where resistance to corrosion is needed.
Copper sulphate. (Chern.) CuSO..5Hp. (See Bluestone).
Copy. (Furn.) Reproduction of fur­Diture, usually of the historic peri­ods. (Print.) All typewritten, hand­written, or printed matter turned over to the printer. .
Copy-holder. (Print.) One who reads aloud from the original copy against which the proofreader checks the printed roof.
Copyright. The exclusive legal right to author or publisher for a book. .
Coquillage. An ornamental shell de­sign used on frames and other light pieces of furniture m rococo style.
Coquina. (Chern.) A rock formed by the adhesion of marine shells. Composition calcium carbonate.
Coral. (Chern.) A marine form of cal­cium carbonate built by the coralpolyp.
CorbeL (Arch.) A bracket or support; a stepping out of courses in a wall to form a ledge.
Corbel out. (Arch.) To build out one or more courses of masonry from the face of a wall to form a support for timbers.
Cord. (Woodwkg.) Wood, cut in 4­ft. lengths usually for firewood. Apile of wood, 4 ft. wide, 4 ft. high, and 8 ft. long.
Core. (Metal.).A central portion. In foundry work, a body of sand either dried or green which permits the obtaining of holes, depressions, etc., in a casting. (Plast.) In plastics, the central layer in a sandwich panel, the outer faces usually- being composed of laminated sheet.
Core box. (Fdry.) A box usually of wood. in which the core is rammed up.
Core-box plane. (Patmkg.) A plane for making circular core boxes. When the right-angle sides of the plane rest on the edges of the cut, the pomt of the plane will cut on the circumference of the circle.
Cored carboD. (Elec.) A carbon with a longitudmal soft core for use in al­ternating-current arc to permit effi­cient operations of the arc.
Cored hole. (Fdry.) A cast hold cored with a dry~sand core instead of de­livering as a hole directly from the pattern. In general, the term is ap­plied to any hole in a casting which is not bored or drilled in the shop.
Core disks. (Elec.) Thin circular disks of sheet iron used for building of laminated armature cores.
Core drier. (Fdry.) A form which serves to retain the shape of a core while it is being baked.
Core drill. (Metalwk.) A hollow drill which removes metal in a solid piece instead of chips. Such a drill is used
