Figure of Merit
Telecom. A receiver is characterized by its figure of merit defined by
F = (SNR)OUT / (SNR)IN
with:
(SNR)OUT = SNR input receiver;
(SNR)IN = SNR at the output of the receiver;
F speaking dB.
Filter
Function, all functions or combination of functions that implements a number of changes to its input space, producing an output set containing only those elements that meet certain entry criteria. Selected items can be processed or not. An example would be a search function that accepts strings with a Boolean relationship (such as a or b but not containing c) and optionally force the case of strings found in the output.
Filter primitive
Function that applies a simple transformation to its input space, producing a total output of only the members who came together to meet the criterion. An example would be a search function that would accept a simple string and producing output line numbers where the string was found.
