HD-DVD
Launched by NEC and Toshiba, the HD DVD is physically close to the current DVD (thickness of 0.6 mm for the substrate and the protective layer), apart from the use of a Laser blue.
It has a capacity of 15 GB per side per layer for the read-only media, and 20 GB rewritable discs. By providing a physical structure close to that of DVD, NEC and Toshiba seek a smooth transition from one technology to another between 2005 and 2010.
