Rootkits are a variety of malware (say for simplicity virus) Appeared first in the world Unix/Linux Then, more recently, in Windows.
Rootkits are malware that can be very difficult to expose and sometimes eradicate. In fact they have two unique features:
Firstly they profoundly alter the functioning of the operating system (possibly his kernel) ;
secondly they go invisible to the operating system.
They may even render invisible other miscellaneous Parasites they will be installed: spyware, backdoor, Trojan... and this is usually the main reason for their existence.
