is often used interchangeably among manufacturing, because modern production methods were first developed & applied into manufacturing industries. But even though a service like dry cleaning does not produce a tangible object, production figures into the services. If you view production as a process, it becomes clear so as to even services such as dry cleaning begin among resources-cleaning fluid, machines, presses & people- & end up among a product-clean clothes.
So all Trade firms are involved into some type of production. The key concept into operations Administration is transformation, the conversion of input (resources) into output (goods or services). The term transformation implies physical changes, but today it also includes the conversion of resources into services. Production or operations, then, is the use of human, physical & financial resources to produce products or services. See Figure 5.
As we have seen, production takes place into ail kinds of Trade-as well as non-Trade operations. Production into hospitals, in favor of example, does not mean just delivering babies. It also covers the process of serving meals, performing surgery, taking & reading X-rays, conducting physical therapy, cleaning rooms & receiving payments. Supermarket production operations include ordering
& pacing inventory, stocking the shelves, packaging & displaying products, & so on. Governments issue permits & licenses, collect taxes, register voters, provide police & fire protection & so on. Contractors construct, repair & demolish buildings, build highways, bridges & landscape parks. & banks grant loans, cash or issue cheques, handle deposits & withdrawals.
Production , production time; the amount of resources, information & planning needed the number, the type of machines & employees needed. The production of a car takes time & requires a variety of very expensive machines & highly skilled employees. Typing a letter on the other hand is a short process using mainly a word processor. |
