Echo send. A mixing console output that sends a signal to the input of a reverberation chamber or device. Most mixing consoles have an echo send level control for each input position (channel) so the musical mix sent to the reverb unit can be adjusted; many consoles also have a master echo send control for the echo send bus.
Economic. Pertaining to money mato ters or wealth, or to the means and methods of living well and wisely.
.Economic speed. (Aero.) The speed at which fuel consumption is at a minimum for a given distance covered in still air.
Economizer. (Engin.) An arrangement of pipes or reservoirs in which the feed water for steam boilers is heated up to or higher than the
boiling point. Feed-water heaters, therefore, are economizers. .
Economy coil. (Elec.) A combination of choking coil and trans
former, used with alternating-current arc lamps when the supply voltage is greater than that needed by the lamps.
Economy wall. (Masonry) A brick wall four inches thick bla.nketed with back mortaring, strengthened at intervals with vertical pilasters, having brick corebelling for the support of floors and roof, providing a four-inch outside reveal for doors and windows, and with every window and door frame bricked in.
Eddy currents. (Elec.) Induced electric currents occurring when a solid metallic mass is rotated in magnetic field. They consume a large amount of energy and often cause a harmful rise in temperature. . 0
Edge. A term co.mmanl)' used to describe the percussive attack of a musical instrument. See "bite".
Edge cross lap. (Carp.) A cross-lap joint in which the pieces approach each other edgewise. See CROSS LAP.
Edged tools. Cutting tools used in the handicrafts especially in woodworking.
Edge roll. (Frun.) A molding detail o of Gothic origin.
Edge flare. (Tel.) A rim of illumination around the edge of the picture on the receiver tube.
Edging. (Cabwk. and Fum.) The small, solid squares set in on the edge Of a top when the face is veneered, as a protection to the veneer.
Edging board. (Lumber) Usually the first board cut from a log after the slab cut, the edge not being filled out.
Edging machine. (Sheet Metal) Also known as "adjustable bar folder"; used for folding edges on pieces of sheet metal.
Edging trowel. A rect~gular shaped trowel with turned down edge on one side; used for edging pavements, curbing, etc.
Edifice. (Arch.) A building. A term usually applied to architecture distinguished for its size or grandeur.
Edison storage battery. (Elec.) A
Edit control. Special jacks that allow you to hook up two VCRs for synchronized operation during tape editing.
Editing. Process of coupling and arranging lengths of tape-recordings to suit a particular programme purpose.
Editing deck. A specially constructed video tape recorder which has, in addition to play and record circuitry, circuitry and controls to accomplish assembly and/or insert editing; an editing deck is used in conjunction with a second video tape- recorder to record a master programme tape (on the editing deck) from various tape-recorded segments being back on the second VTR.
Efface. To rub out, erase, remove or obliterate.
Effective area. (~ero.) The effective area of a screw blade is that obtained by the projection of the blade on a plane at right angles with its axis. It is less than the superficial area. I
Effective conductance. (Elee.) The ratio of the energy component of a cun'ent to the total e.m.f. in an alternating-current circuit.
Effective current. (Elee.) The strength of a current as indicated by a constant reading ammeter.
Effective helix angle. (Aero.) The angle of the helix described by a particular point on a propeller blade as the airplane movesforward through air otherwise undisturbed. ,
Effective horse-power. (Engin) The amount of useful energy that can be delivered by an engine.
Effective landing area. (Aero.) That portion of the landing area, with approaches clear within the allowable safe climbing and gliding angle available for the take off and landing of aircraft.
Effective propeller pitch. (Aero.) The distance travelled by the aircraft for one revolution of the propeller.
Effective propeller thrust. (Aero. )The net driving force developed by an aircraft propeller.
Effective thrust. (Aero.) The net driving force of a propellerin action.
Effective value. (Elee.) The value of an alternating current or voltage which is indicated on a volt or ammeter connected in the Circuit. It is a value which is .707 times the maximum (peak) value of that voltage or current.
Effects bus. In mixing console, the bus or channel which is used a feed a programme to special signal processing equipment or effects device. Also known as the effects send bus. Typical effects devices include delay lines, phasers, and fIangers, as well as echo/reverb units.
Effects return. A mixing console input that receives the signal from an effects device. Many mixing consoles have a level control to
