Electrolyte to Electrostatics.
Electrolyte. (Elec.) The common term applied to the mixture of sulphuric acid and water used in a lead storage cell or battery. All acids, bases, and salts, are electrolytes.
EI~ctrolyte level. (Auto.) The proper amount of electrolyte .coverage of the plates in a storage-battery cell.
Electrolytic. Commonly, a type of capacitor; also an electrochemical tlction.
Electrolytic condenser. (Elec.) SEE CONDENSER ELECTROLYTE.
Electrolytic copper. (Metal.).Copper produced mainly from the sulphide ores of the western United States by electrolytic processes. After passng through several processes, it is cast into cakes, slabs, wire bars, ingots, and billets.
electrolytic corrosion. (Elec.) Corrosion by electrolysis, of metal bodies in contact with dampness when in the vicinity of electric currents.
electrolytic iron. (Metal.) A very pure iron produced by an electrolytic process. It has. excellent magnetic properties and is often used in magnet cores.
Electrolytic rectifier. (Elec.) A rectifier employing the principle of electro-chemistry to change A.C. to D.C.
Electrolytic refining. The refining of metals by electrolysis.
Electromagnet. A magnet produced by passing an electric current through the insulated wire conductor coiled around a core of soft iron.
Electromagnetic field. (Elec.) The area between the poles of an electromagnet through which the magnetic lines of force travel; or the area of magne.tic effect.
Electromagnetic induction. (Elec.) A wire cutting lines of force of a magnetic field has induced in it an e.mJ.
Electromagnetism. (Elec.) Magnetic lines of force set up. by cUlTent flowing through turns of wire wound on an iron core.
Electromotive. The force which starts and maintains a current of electricity through a conductor, measured in terms of volts.
Electromotive force of self.;.induction. (Elec.) E.M.F., set up in a single coil due to the inductive effect between its windings.
Electron. (Elec.) A very small atomic particle; it possesses the smallest amount of negative electric charge found in nature.
Electron beam. (Tel.) A stream of electrons constrained and focused into the shape of a beam by external electrostatic magnetic fileds; also called cathode-ray beam
Electron gun. (Tel.) A system of metallic cylinders arranged in the. narrow ends of both the camera and receiver tubes in which the
electron beam, used for scanning the image before the television camera, and for reproducing it in the television receiver, is formed.
Electronic. Involving the use of active components such as valves, transistors and diodes, though also often applied to any complex cir
Electronic apparatus. (I) One whic accomplishes its purpose through the intermediary of electrons, relatively free from the grosser matter to which they are. ordinarily bound;2) Arc for safety interruptions of. power circuits, spark gaps in lightning arrestors, spark plugs, electric arc welders, electric arc fumances, precipitrons for cleaning air of dust.
Electronic editing. Repositioning video signal segments on a reel of video tape without physically cut~ ting the tape; a recording of thevideo signal segments in different order. ElectrQnic editing impli~s that the edited version of the programme will be one generation removed from the recordings gromwhich it was assembled.
Electronic field production. The use 9f small, high-quality recording equipment for purposes other than news gathering.
Electronic flash. A photographic flash unit powered by electricity. The power is stored until the unit is used, when it discharges through a tube of gas to produce a bright light.
Electronics. (Elec.) The science which deals with free electrons, the means of setting them free, their motions when free, and the effects. they can produce by being acted upon while fre(... These electrons are free in the sense that they are at greater distances than the radii of the outermost stable orbits of the normal atom. These free electrons are more than 10-8 c.m. away from nuclei. The science of the practical application of the theory of electrons in such devices as radio tubes, photoelectric cells, etc.
Electronic viewfinder. Viewfinder; viewfinder monitor. A small TV screen attached to the video.camera which allows the operator to view. a given scene exactly as it is being viewed by the camera.
Electron tube. (Elec.) An electron device in .which conduction by electrons takes. place through a vacuum or gaseous medium within a gastight envelope.
Electron metal. (Metal.) An alloy of magnesium with 5 per cent zinc and .5 per cent coper. Used for atomobile pistons.
Electroplating. The act or process of depositing metal by electric means.
Electroscope. (Elec.) A device for detecting the presence of electrostatic charges.
Electrostatic corona. (Elec.) Ionic discharge which surrounds the electrodes when a static charge builds up sufficient frequency and potential.
Electrostatic discharge. (Elec.) Arc formed by a difference of potential between electrostatic bodies.
Electrostatic field. (Elec.) The 1trea about an electrostatically charged body.
Electrostatics. (Elec.) That branch of electrical science which treats of the phenomena of electricity at rest, or of frictional electricity.
