Gable. (Arch.) The triangular end of an exterior wall above the eaves.
Gable molding. (Arch.) The molding used to finish a gable.
Gable roof. (Engin.) A slang word applied to any small, handy appli­ance. or device.
Gaggers. (Fdry.) Metal supports used to reinforce the sand in the cope; commonly used to support hanging bodies of sand when making molds on the floor. Gain. Degree of signal amplification achieved in an amplifier circuit. Expressed in decibels (dB). Oppo­site: negative gain or loss.
Gain control. A device which adjusts the gain of an amplifier, commonly by changing the amount of negative feedback. Not to be confused with an "attenuator" or "volume" con­tro\.
Galena. (Mineral.) The most impor­tant ore of lead. It is a sulphide, that is, a compound of lead and sulphur (PbS) containing 86.5 per cent lead.
Gallery. (Arch.) (I) An elevated floor in a large audience room, usually projecting from the walls, supported by columns from below, or hung from above, or both; generally equipped with seats. (2) A room in which works of art are displayed.

Galley. (Print.) A wooden or metal oblong tray for holding type after it has been set: It consists of a flat base and three raised sides, the fourth being left open so that com­posed matter may be pushed off without lifting it.
Galley lock. (Print.) A device for holding type in position on the galley while proofs are being pulled.
Galley press. (Print.) A press used for proofing galleys of type. It consists, essentially, of a base and a heavy roller running on tracks.
Galley proof. (Print.) A rough proof taken from a galley of type matter. .
Galley rack. (Print.) A rack divided info sections for holding galleys of type.
Gallic acid. (Chern.) Colourless or slightly yellow, crystalline needle or prisms (C6~(OH)3COOH). Spe­cific gravity 1.694; melting point 222 to 240 deg. C. Used for. photo-graphy, ink, dyeing, medi­cine, etc.
Galling. (Metal.) A characteristic of metals which causes them to seize when brought into intimate con­tact with
each other. A material which is subject to galling is one which will seize or "freeze" when brought into close contact with like material under pressure and no lubricant.

Gallon. A unit of liquid measure con­taining 4 quarts, 8 pints, 231 cubic inches.
Galloon. (Uphol.) A .narrow binding of tapelike materiaL
Galvanic action. (Chern.) The aCtion upon one another of electro-posi­tive and electro-negative metals, wasting away the positive metal; particularly noticeable where iron and copper, or zinc and copper, or brass and iron, are in contact in the presence of acidulated water.
Galvanic corrosion. (Metal.) The accelerated corrosion of one metal when it is connected with a more noble metal, e.g., if steel and copper are connected together in sea water, the steel will suffer accelerated corrosion and the cqpper will be protected.
Galvanize. To coat iron with zinc. It is. not usually an electrical process, but consists simply of dipping the iron in molten zinc.
Galvanized iron. Iron, which, after having undergone a cleansing process, has been dipped in a bath of. molten zinc. The most common process has nothing to do with galvanic action.
Galvanized sheets. Sheets of galva­nized iron 20 to 30 in. wide and 96 in. long.
Galvanizing. The depositing of a zinc coating on iron.
Galvanometer. (Elec.) An instrument for detecting small currents or dif­ference of potential. Gambrel roof.A roof having its slope broken by an obtuse angle.
Gamma rays. (gamma radiation) (Phys.) High energy, deep penetrat­ing X-rays.
Gang dies. (Metalwk.) Two or more punches and dies in one holder for making an equivalent number of openings fn a blank with one.stroke of the press.
Gang drilling machine. A drill press equipped with severa] spindles so that a number of holes can be drilled at one time. It is particu­larly useful in quantity production work.
Ganged. Controls linked for opera­tion by a single knob; particularly in stereo preamplifiers where most controls work in pairs. (Synonym for friction clutched.)
Gang mills. A series of milling cut­ters arranged on the same mandrel to increase production; may be used to machine two or more surfaces at one time.
Gang printing. A combination of several jobs locked up in one form for printing at one time.
Gang switch. (Elec.) A unit of two or more switches to give control of two or more circuits from one point. The entire mechanism is mounted in one box under one cover.
Gang tool. (Metalwk.) A tool holder with several cutting tools arranged so ea~h tool cuts a little deeper than the one in advance of it. Gang tools are used on lathes and plan­ers.
