Gay-Lussac's law. (phys.) When the pressure is kept constant, the valume coefficient of all gases is the same;
Gear. (Mech.) A very general term applied to toothed wheels, valve motions, pump work, lifting tackle, ropes, etc. The point or portion of the tooth of a gear wheel lying outside the pitch cricle is the addendum; that portion between the pitch the root lines is the dedendum.
Gear case. (Mach.) A housing or metal box within which gears operate. Usually the gear case is filled with lubricant.
Gear cutters. Circular cutter of hardened steel whose section is that !>f tile tooth spaces which they are intended to cut.
Gear driven super-charger. (Aero.) A supercharger driven by gears from the engine.
Geared chuck. A form of universal chuck.
Geared head. A headstock equipped with back gear
Geared propeller. (Aero.)A propeller driven through gearing, generally at some speed other than the engine speed.
Geared pump. A pump which is driven by the engine through the use of gearing.
Geared shapero (Mach.) A rack and pinion operates the ram with a slow cutting stroke and a quick return, by open the crossed belts as on a planer.
Gearing. The term has the same general meaning as gear, but is applied more especially to gear wheels.
Gearing down. The reduction of speed from the driver to the driven by the use of gear wheels, with an accompanying gain in power.
Gear ratio. (Auto.) The relation between number of teeth on driving and driven gears.' .
Gear shifting. (Auto.) Throwing into mesh different sets of the changespeed gears in order to vary the speed ratio and power between engine and rear axle.
Gear-shift lever. (Auto.) A lever by means of which the change-speed gears are shifted.
Gear stocking cutter to Geometrical mean
Gear stocking cutter.A cutter used to rough out gear teeth,to speed production and to permit a light and accurate finish cut.
Gear-tooth caliper. (Mach.) A vernier-type calipcr used for measuring the depth and thickness of gear tceth on the pitch line.
Gear train. (Mach.) An arrangement of two or more gears connecting driving and driven parts.
Gei8er counter. (phys.) A gas-filled electric device which detects the presence of radioactivity by counting the formaton of ions.
Gel. (Chern. Plast.) A somewhat rigid, generally transparent, two-phase liquid-solid system in which the solid is precipitated as aggregates in and around which the liquid is held.
Gelatin. (Chern.) Made from certain kinds of bones and parts of skin, selected, washed, and treated with special care. Glue is an impurc gelatin. High-tested, sweet gelatin made from clean stock, under sanitary conditions, is sold for food purposes.
Gelation. (Plast.) A state in the hardening cycle ofllquid plastic in which the linkage of molecules has progressed to a point where the resin turns from a fluid state to that of a
jellylike form, just preceding hardcning. The thickening stage.
Gel time. (Plast.) The interval elapsed between catalyzation of the resin and its initial thickening.
Genelite. (Metal.) A bronze, bearing metal, which contains about 40 per ccnt, by volume, of graphite, which permits a considerable absorption of oil.
General drawing.A scale drawing showing an entire machine or other article, with all the parts located in their proper relations to one. another. More commonly known as an assembly drawing.
Generator. (Elec.) A general term applied to machines which are used for the transformation of mechanical energy into electrical energy.
Generator bus bars. (Elec.) The bars of copper placed in back of a switchboard carrying the output of the generator. The distributing circuits are fed from these buses.
Geneva motion. (Shopwk.)A device whieh gives a positive but intermittent motion to the driven wheel, but prevents its moving in either direction without the driver. The dirver may have one tooth or a number of teeth as desired. Also made so as to prevent a complete revolution of the driven wheel.
Geodetic surveying. That very accurate method of surveying which takes into consideration the spheroidal form of the earth's surface. Used in topographic and hydrographic work.
Geology. The science of the history of the earth as shown in its rocks.
Geometrical. Of or pertaining to geometry; according to the rules of geometry; forming or consisting of regular lines, Cl,lrves, and angles.
Geometrical mean. The geometrical mean of two numbers is obtained by multiplying the two together
