Nosing. (An~h.) That portion of a stair tread which projects beyond the riser on which it rests. Notati<m. Act, process, or method of representing by a series of marks, signs, figures, or characters; or, the system so used.
Notch. An angular cut, indentation, or hollow in an object, surface, or edge .
Notching. (Furn.) A form of decoration formerly used on oak furniture.
Notching machine. (Sheer-Met. Wk.) A machine used for notching blanks of pkced sheet-metal ware, for cutting the corners of square pans, etc. The notching is accomplished. by means of dies.
Novolak. (Chern. Plast.) A permanently fusible and soluble phenolaldehyde resin. More spe.cifically it is the reaction-product of one molecule of phenol with less than one molecule of formaldehyde, and an acid catalyst.
Nozzle. (Mech. Engin.) A contracted vent, usually at the end of a flexible tube, as a hose. (Plast.) The injection end of a plastic molding machine.
Nuclear. Of, pertaining to, or forming a nucleus; operated or powered by atomic energy.
Nuclear energy. (phys.) The energy released in a nuclear reaction.
Nuclear: physics. The branch of phySics that deals with the behaviour, structure, and component parts of atomic nuclei.
Nuclear turbojet. (Aero.) A turbojet engine having a nuclear reactor rather than a combustion chamber to heat the incoming air for expansion through the turbine and out the jet nozzle.
Nucleon. A proton or neutron esp when considered as a component of a nucleus.
Nucleonics. The branch of science that deals with atomic nuclei esp . practical applications.
Nucleus. (Chem.) The inner core of the atom, consisting of tightly locked neutrons and protons.
Nulling. (Carp.) Turned. or carved detail, quadrant shaped in section, . used on frizes and moldings in Jacobean work.
Number drills. (Metalwk.) Small drills numbered from I to 80, with diameters expressed in thousandth of an inch. No. I is 0.228 in. diameter; No. 80 is 0.0135 in. diameter.
Numbering machine. A machine or device for stamping consecutive numbers on checks, tickets, etc.
Number 1. (Paperrnkg. and Print.) A prefix used with reference to the best grade of a paper.
Numerals. (Print.) The most commonly used, or Arabic numerals are 1,2,3,4,5,6, 7, 8, 9, 0; the Roman numerals are I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500), M (1000).
Numerator. (I) In writing a fraction that part above the denominator.
