Mascaron to Matched board

Mascaron. A mask decoration of a human head. Mash seam welding.A seam welding process wherin the overlap is maintainted sufficiently smaal to permit fusion and plastic reduction of the overlap to approxmiately the thickness of one of the parts bieng joined.

Mask. (Furn.) A human, animal, or grotesque face without the rest of the body, used as an ornament.

Masonite. A trade name for an insulating wood-fiber board. It is made with a wide variety of surface

finishes. Used extensively for paneling, etc.

Masonry. The work of one who builds with stone, brick, etc.

Mason's miter. (Furn.) An early form of joinery used on panel moldings.

Mass. (Fine Arts) A large part of a piece of work consistng of a unity of colour. (phys.) Quantity of matter possessed by a body or the meas­urement of a body's inertia. (Print.) Groups of patches of type matter on a page.

Mass production. The manufacture of any article in quantity by the use of special machines and tools.

Master cylinder. (Auto.) The fluid cylinder containing the piston by means of which the brakes are ap­plied through pressure on the foot pedal.

Master gauge. A gauge of any type kept in reserve for occasional test­ing the accuracy of similar gauges of everyday use.
Master-keyed. (Shopwk.) A lock is Master workman. A workman of more than ordinary skill. The term "master mechanic" is often applied to shop foremen and superintendents.

Mastic. -(rock asphalt) Sandstone naturally saturated with bitumen; excellent for paving and floors. (Plaster.) A quick-drying cement.

Mat. (Plast.) In plastics, a nonwoven fibrous glass material, blown on a form with binder, and consisting of short length glass fiber, usually cut from Fiberglass roving in the blowing mechanism. Mat is un­der stood as sheet, though the same material is used in Preforms. (See Performs.) The common commercial mat is either I or 2 ounce for general use, or it may be overlay mat, a very thin finish­ing mat. Mat cannot be draped over three dimensional forms, and is therefore used primarily in flat. laminations. Draping is accom­plished with Fiberglas cloth.

Mat board. (Paper) A thick paper board used for mounting.
Matched board. (Woodwkg.) Boards finished to secure close joints, by tongue and groove or by rebated edge.

Matched metal molding to Maxhete Matched metal molding. (Plast.) Molding reinforced plastics between two matched metal dies or molds, using a press, and pressure and heat.

Matched parting. (Wood Patmkg.) Consists in forming a projection upon the parting surface of the cope part of ~e pattern and making a corresponding depression in the parting surface of the drag part of the pattern.

Match plates. (Fdry.) Plates of wood or metal on which patterns are mounted to increase production especially when a large number of .. castings are required.

Mated position (Auto.) When sliding gears are properly meshed they are said to be in mated position.
Materially. In an important manner or degree; substantially; essentially.

Materi31 well. (Plast.) Space provided in a compression or transfer mold to care for bulk factor.

Mat finish. (Leather and Paper) A dull, lusterless finish.

Mathematics. The science which treats of relations between quantities and operations.

Matrix. In general, a place within which something takes form. (Prillt.) That part of mold in the type-casting machine which forms the face of the letter. Also a heavy, unsized, and unfinished paper used for making molds for stereotype plates. (Tel.) Shell or stamper carrying negative imprint of record groove and used for pressing final commercial discs. Derived from positive Mother which came from negative Master made from original direct-cut lacquer. A general process whereby signals can be added together for recording or transmission on fewer channels, and latter retrieved through a complementary process.

Matrix Surround. Similar to the old quadraphonic four-channel audio process, it provides abotu 70% to 80% of the Dolby-encoded audio information on movie soundtracks.

Matrix Quadraphony. Quadra­phonic system in which four sig­nals are encoded according to cer­tain phase/amplitude rules (via a circuit matrix) to occupy two con­ventional stereo channels. Subse­quent decoding provides approxi­mate recreation of original four signals, while two-channel repro­duction gives compatible stereo signal. Matt. (Ceram.)A galzed finish with out gloss.

Matte. (Metal.) A crude or incom­pletely refined form of copper. The term is also sometimes applied to a mixture containing many other metals.
Matted. (Furn.) Referring to the rough background of carved oak.
Matter. (Phys.) Anything which has eight and occupies space.

Maul. A heavy mallet. Mausoleum. (Arch.) An elaborate omb.

Mauve. A delicate purple colour or dyestuff.

Maxhete. (Metal.) An alloy steel con­taining nickel, chromium, tungsten, copper, and silicon. It has a very remarkable capacity for resisting the effects of heat and corrosion.
