Mesh. (Shopwk.) Opening formed by crossing string or wires.
Meso-colloids. (Chem. Plast.) Polymers intermediate between hemicolloids and eucolloids; that is, of a degree of polymerization between about 100 and 1000.
Metal. In the trades the terms is used not only to designate the elementary metallic substance but those refined or partially refined products of the ores which have such characteristics as ductility, malleability, fusibility, etc.; also used as a general classification to include a wide variety of alloys.
Metal arc welding. An arc-welding process wherein the electrode supplies the filler metal in the weld.
Metal dip brazing. A dip-brazing. process wherein the filler metal is obtained from the molten metal bath.
Metalene nails. (Uphol.) Nails with large round or flat heads. Used for tacking leather gimp on furniture.
Metal filament. (Elec.) The electrical conductor which glows when heated in an incandescent lamp.
Metal finishing. The final step in metalwork in which the piece is given either a duIl or glossy finish.
Metal furniture. (Print.) Blocks of type metal, le~s than type high, in pica lengths and widths, used for filling in space in composition and locking up.
Metalizing. (Plast.) Covering plastic with a thin deposit of metal. (See Vacuum metalizing.)
Metal lacquer. Amyl and ethyl acetate solutions of nitrated cotton used as a dipping lacquer for objects made of metal.
Metallic. Consisting of or like metal. Metallurgy. The art or science of separating metals from ores by smelting or alloying; the study of metals.
Metal pattern. (Fdry.) Foundry patterns are made of metal for durability. They are usually reproduced from wooden patterns.
Metal spinning. (Shopwk.) The process by which light articles in the maIleable metals are made to assume circular and molded shapes, through pressure applied to them while in rapid rotation in the lathe..
Metal spraying.. A protective coating for metals obtained by feeding a wire through a hydrogen-oxygen flame where it is atomized and sprayed on the prepared surface.
Metamorphic rock. (Min.) Rock' which has changed from its original character, as igneous or sedimentary rock.
Meteorograph. (Aero.) A recording instrument for obtaining meteorological informaion above the earth's surface. It contains elements to record temperature, pressure, and humidity (also caIled aerograph.)
Meteorology. (phys.) That branch of physics that treats of the atmosphere and its phenomena, especially conditions that effect the weather. Meter to MIcro meter
Meter. (Mech.) (1) The fundamental unit of length in the metric system. It equals 39.37 inches. Commonly used .in land surveying. (2) An instrument or device for measuring liquids, gasses, electric current, etc.
Metering orifice. (Auto.) A fixed opening alongside the Venturi through which gasoline flow is regulated to supply fuel on various demands. .
Metering pin. (Auto.) A pin which seats itself in the metering orifice and regulates the flow of gas through same.
Metering rod. (Auto.) The rod linked to the throttle arm by which ~e gasoline flow is regulated.
Methane. (Chem.) An odourless gas (CH4) formed by decomposition of vegetable matter or by dry distillation of organic matter. An important component of illuminating gas. (SEE MARSH GAS.)
Methanol. (Chem.) CHpH. Also known as methyl alcohol, wood alcohol, wood spirit, and by various other names. Used as a fuel, as a solvent for varnishes and paints, and for denaturing alcohol.
Methyl. (Chern.) The CH3 radical. The radical left by the replacement of one hydrogen atom of methane. It is a part of many compounds.
Methyl acetone. (Chem.) A mixture of methyl acetate and acetone. Used as a solvent for rubber.
Metric gear. (Shopwk.) Gear designed according to the metric system of measurement.
Metric plug~ (Auto.) A spark plug on which the screw threads conform to metric standards.
Metric system. (Engin.) A decimal system of weights and measures based on multiples often. First used In, France, now in universal use in scientific work. (See following tables.)
Metric threads. Screw threads proportioned to the scale of metric measurement.
Mezzanine. (Arch.) A gallery like floor, usually midway between the ground floor and the one above it.
Mezzotint. (Print.) A process of engraving on copper or steel in imi-tation of painting in India ink. Invented by Ludwig von Siegen in 1643. M.F.Abbreviation for machine finish.
Mica. (Min.) A class of silicates of perfect cleavage; splits into thin scales or sheets.
Micas. (Papermkg.) A decorative box-cover paper which has a coating of mica tinted with anliine dyes. It is printed with white intaglio and embossed, as a rule.
Microampere. (Elec.) One millionth of an ampere. 0.000001 amp.
Microfarad. (Elec.) A unit of capacity, being one millionth of a fara~1.
Micrometer. A device attached to some instrument to permit extreme accuracy in adjustment or .in
