Mortise chisel to Molor

printing plate in which type charac­t~rs can be inserted. (Woodwkg.) A space hollowed out. as in a piece of wood, to receive a tenon; mortise­and-tenon joint.

Mortise chisel. (Woodwk.) A narrow face, heavy-bodiM chisel used in cutting mortises.

Mortise gauge. (Woodwk.) A wood­worker's tool consisting of a block or head and a bar containing two scratch pins which can be adjusted to .the desired width of the mortise to be cut. .

Mortise lock. (Arch.) Any lock that is fitted into a mortise.

Mortising machine. (Woodwkg.) A machine for cutting mortises in wood, either by means ()f a chisel or by a circular cutting bit.

Mosaic. A design formed by small pieces of glass, stone, or tile, usu­ally set in a ground in cement or stucco.

MOS FET. A FET utilising MOO (Metal Oxide Semiconductor) element.

Mosseclge. (Furn.) A decorative edge, made of a heavy-pile material, used in uphoLstery.

Mother. Positive shell used in disc record manu~acture. A few are pro­duced from a negative Master and used in turn to produce negative stampers or matrixes employed for actual disc pressing.

Mother-of-pearl. The hard iridescent layer on the inner surface of certain shells, as the pearl oysters; used extensively for making buttons and other small articles.

Motif. (Furn.) A predomiant idea in design, or decoration.

Motion. (Phys.) Change of position which a body undergoes.

Motion study. (Masonry).Relates to a study of the movements of work­men in performing certain opera~ tions. Such study is made the idea of increasing the efficiency of me­chanics by the elimination of un­necessary motions.

Motive power. (Engin.) The particu­lar source of energy which is ap­plied to activate a prime mover or a machine.

Motometer. (Mach.) A speed counter, as for a steam engine; also a speedometer.

Motor. (Elec.) A machine for trans­forming electrical energy into me­chanical energy. (Mech.) An inter­nal-combustion engine, as the gasoline engine of an automobile. Commonly refers to complete belt­drive turntable mechanism. in­cluding driving motor.

Motor analyzer. (Auto.) A group of instruments, usually assembled in a single case or on a single panel, by which such items as cylinder com­pression, air-fuel ratio, and ignition timing can be checked.

Motorboating. Type of amplifier in­stability due to inadequate HT smoothing or positive feedback to infrasonic frequencies. Sometimes heard as 'motor-boating' sound in loud-speaker. .

Motor drive. (Shopwk.) The modem method of supplying power to a machine by a motor, usually directly connected to it, as distinguished from the older style of delivering power from an engine, through the line shaft and countershaft to the machine.

Motor generator. (Elec.) Anelectric motor driving a generator changing alternating current to direct current, or the reverse.

Motor hoist. A hoisting device oper­ated either manualy or by power.

Motor jet. (Aero.) A jet engine having its compressor driven by a recipro­cating gas engine. An aircraft having such an engine.

Motor starter. (Elec.) A variable re­sistance box connected in series with a motor for starting duty. As the speed of the motor increases, the resistance is decreased until it is entirely cut out of circuit.

Motor torque. (Elec.) Turning effort. The turning moment or pull which causes rotation, or tendency to ro­tate, in a motor.

Mottled. Covered with spots of different colour or shades of colour. (Paper.) A paper with a variegated finish which is intentionally produced. Also applied to a defect called "crushing" present in the web during pressing which res­embles curdled milk in appearance.

Mount. (Furn.) A fitting or other ornamented piece usually made of metal, placed on furniture to deco­rate and strengthen.

Movie. A motion picture theatre. Movieola. (Tel.) A motion-picture de­vice for editing film.

Moving coil galvanometer. (Elec.) A sensitive instrument in which a movable coil supported in a strong magnetic field, set up by a perma­nent magnet, indicates or detects small currents of electricity flow­ing through the coil.

Moving-needle galvanometer. (Elec.) An instrument in which a movable magnetic needle indicates the pr-esence of an electric current flowing through a coil of many turns of fine wire wound around or near the needle.

Mucid. (musid) Musty; moldy. Mucilage. An adheSive solution made from a vegetable gum and water.

Muck bar. (Metal.) In the manufac­ture of wrought iron, the bloom is passed through muck rolls and is then known as "muck bar." Muck bar contains too much slag to per­mit the use of the metal without further refining. .

Mudsill. (Arch.) A foundation tim­ber of a structure placed directly on the ground.
