Muffle to Mutualinductance

Muffle to Multiple drilling machine

Muffle. (Cera",,) The fire-clay chamber in which ware is placed for firing. (Mech.) To reduce the noise of a motor exhaust by passing it through the device known as a muffer.

Muft1er. (Auto.) A mechanical device consisting usually of a hollow cy­linder attached to the exhaust pipe of a gasoline engine, through which the exhaust is passed in order to partially deaden the sound.

Mulch. (Agric.) Any substance used to protect roots of plants from heat, cold, or drought, or to keep fruit clean.

Mule pulley stand. (Mech.) An arrangement of two loose pulleys on an auxiliary shaft, so placed as to facilitate the transmission of power between two shafts which are at an angle with each other. Often referred to as a device for carrying power around corners.

Mullion. (Arch.) The large vertical division of a window opening. In grouped windows, the member which separates the different units.

Multi color press. (Prillt.) A press on which more than two colours are printed at one time.

Multi-filament lamp. (Elec.) Large incandescent lamps are often made with a number of filament joints in parallel so that the lamp may con tinue to give service if one fila­ment should burn out.

Multi graph. A device for printing letters and documents so that they resemble typewritting copies.

Multi part bearing.consist primarily o(three or more sec ­ tions in contact with the journal, and arranged to give least interfer­ence with oil film. These sections are contained in a housing. Bear­ings of this type are used on heavy­duty installations.

Multiplane. (Aero.) A biplane or triplane; any airplane with two or more main supporting surfaces placed one above another.

Multiplex. To send several messages or signals simultaneously.

Multiple. Cosisting of many parts; repeated many times. A number which contains another an exact number of times.without a remain­der.

Multiple disk clutch. (Auto.) A clutch consisting of a number of faced disks, one set driving and the other driven; pressure is furnished by a coil spring under compression. The clutch is released by pressure on the clutch pedal. There are two types of these clutches, the wet and the dry. The wet type is essentially the same except that it. runs in a bath of lubricating oil mixed with kerosene.

Multiple drilling machine. A ma­chine in which a number of drill Multiple projection wehling to Mutual inductance spindles are arranged parallel to each other, and are driven simulta­neously.

Multiple projection welding. A pro­jection-welding process where in two or more separate welds are made simultaneously in parallel.

Multiple series. (Elec.) A parallel connection of two or more series circuits.

Multiple-threaded screw. (Mach.) A screw with several helixes winding around its body. Used to impart more rapid motion than could be obtained by a single-threaded screw.

Multipolar. (Elec.) A known resis­tance used with a voltmeter or a galvano-meter to increase their range.

Multiplier. (Elec.) Having more than two poles.

Multipolar motor. (Elec.) A motor which has four or more field mag­net poles.

Multipurpose. An to be used for several purposes.

Multi-speed motor. (Elec.) A motor capable of being driven at anyone or two or more different speeds independent of the load.

Multivibrator. A form of relaxation oscillator consisting of two linear inverters so that the input of one is derived from the output of the other. '

Mu-metaI. An alloy containing nickel, iron and copper, characterised by high magnetic permeability and 10\\ hysterisis losses.

Muntin. (Arch.) The small membei that divides the glass in a window sash. .

 

Muntz metal. (Metal.) An alloy of 60-62 parts copper and 38-40 parts zinc. It is used for ship sheathing.

Muriatic acid. (Chern.) Commercial name commonly applied to hydro­chloric acid (HCI).

Mushet steel. (Metal.) Contains 9 per cent tungsten, 2.5 per cent man­ganese, and 1.85 per cent carbon. It is used mainly for cutting tools, particularly for those used for tak­ing heavy cuts on extra hard ma­terial.

Music. The art of combining and regulating sounds of varying pitch to produce compositions expres­sive of various ideas and emotions. Music box. A box or case containing an apparatus for producing music mechanically.

Muslin. (Textile) Firm cotton cloth used especially for sheets and pil­low cases.

Muslin cover. (Up/wi.) An excellent first cover under which the stuff­ing can be drawn to desired shape and firmness. This is essential when the top covering is to be of silk or damask.

Mute. To deaden or muffle the sound

Mutton quad. (Prillt.) An em quad. Mutual capacitance. A measure of the extent to which two capacitors can affect each other.

Mutual inductance. (Elec.) The effect produced by the magnetic field of one coil acting on, or linking with, a second coil. The voltage induced in one circuit by the cur­rent changes in another circuit.

 

Mutule. (Arch.) A flat block under the corona of the Doric cornice. The same as rafter ends in wood construction.

Myrtle. (Wood) Also known as Cali fornia laurel. The wood is hard. strong. greenish yellow wit.} high lights which make it attractive as veneer. On the West Coast of the United States it is a general-pur­pose wood.
