Parasol monoplane to Parting sand

Parasol monoplane. (Aero.) A mono­plane in which the wing is above the' fuselage.

Parchment. (Papermkg.) A glossy, transparent, durable paper pro­duced in imitation of animal parchment. It is common in' a sized paper which is made tough and waterproof by being soaked in a weak solution of sulphuric acid.

Pargeting. (Arch.) (I) Ornamental plaster or stucco work in relief. (2) The plastering of the inside of flues to give a smooth surface and help the draft:

Paring. (Woodwk.) A method of wood turning employed by wood turn­ers as opposed to the scraping method of turning usually fol­lowed by pattern makers.

Paring chisel. (Wood Patmkg.) A long chisel used by pattern makers in making, paring, or slicing cuts, thus obtaining a smoother surface than would re!1ult if the cuts were taken directly across the grain.

Paring gouge. (Woo4 Patrnkg.) A woodworkers bench gouge which has the angle of the ,cutting edge ground on the inside or concave face of the blade.

Paris green. (Chern.) (CuHA.o3) A poisonous copper arsenite used as a pigment and for destroying in­sects.

Parking lamp. (Auto.) The term was formerly applied only to those lowpowered lamps mounted where they could be seen from either direction, usually on the left rear fender, showing white from the front and red from the rear. The term now covers both cowl lights and rear lamp taken collectively.

Parquetry. (Bldg.) Wooden mosaic for floors' or furniture.

Parted core box. (Patmkg.) A pat­tern made up of two or more parts, to facilitate its withdraw I from the sand. The parts of the pattern take their name from the section of the flask in which they are molded, as the cope or drag of the pattern.

Partial pressure. The pressure that a gas in a mixture of gases would exert if it occupied the same vol­ume as the mixture at the same temperature.

Particle. SlDall part, atom.

Parting. (Fdry.) The joint or surface which separates two sections of a ' mold.

Parting agent. (Plast.) A material applied to plastic molds to facili­tate parting the casting from the mold. When it is rem~mbered that most plastics are adhesives, the need for this agent will be under­stood. Waxes and plastic film applied as liquids, are examples of parting agents. .

Parting sand. (Fdry.) Burned mold­ing sand or a manufactured part­ing compound dusted over the surface of the sand in the drag to avoid having sand in cope stick to it.

Parting tool. (Wood Turn.) A narrowblade turning tool used for cutting grooves, recesses, and for cutting off.

Partition. (Bldg.) A permanent inte­rior wall which serves to divide a building into rooms. In dwelIings partitions are usually made of studding covered with lathe and plaster. In factories, office build­ings, and institutions, concrete, hollow tile, brick or even glass is used.

Partition plate. (Bldg.) The horizon­tal . member at the top of a parti­tion wall, serving as a cap for the studs and as a support for joists, rafters, or studs.

Party wall. (Arch.) A partition of brick or stone between adjoining properties.

Pascal's law. (Phys.) Pressure applied to a given area of a fluid enclosed in a vessel is transmitted undi­minished to every equal area of the vessel. .

 

Pasteboard. (Papermkg.)Today, used t:nmmnnly with. reference to any stiff paperboard of medium thick­ness. Originally applied to mate­rial made by pasting several sheets of paper together.

Pasted core. (Elec.) The kind of plate used .in the cheaper types of lead storage cells. A grid of lead and antimony has forced into its in­terstices a chemical compound which, after a short period of forming, becomes either .the posi­tive or negative plate according to the chemicals used.

Pasted stock. (Paper) Card stock built up by pasting together sev­eral thicknesses. Rated as two ply, three ply, etc.

Pastel. (Art.) A kind of colored crayon made of a paste composed of colors ground and compounded with gum water, etc.

Patch 1;Jo1t. A flathead bolt threaded the full length of the body. The square shank, which projects from the head to permit setting the bolt with a wrench, is re­moved after the bolt is in posi­tion. Patch bolts are used in making repairs to boiler plate, structural shapes, etc.

Patent. The sole right in an inven­tion granted by the government.

Patent application. The drawings, claims, and forms submitted-to the Patent Office by the inventor, usually through his attorney, when seeking a patent.

Patent base. (Print.) A honeycomb or slotted metal base whereon un­mounted electrotypes can be fas­tened at any desired angle.

Patent grant. This grant gives to the patentee for the term of the patent, the sole and exclusive right to manufacture, sell, and . use the article so patented.
