Y to Young modulous
Yankee machine. (Papermkg.) A Fourdrinier paper machine having a large single dryer with a highly polished surface. When the paper contacts this surface it assumes a glazed finish.
Yardage. (Engin.) A term referring to the amount of earth excavated expressed in cubic yards.
Yardstick. A graduated, wooden, measuring scale 36 inches long. Such a scale made of metal would properly be called a 36-inch scale.
Yaw. (Aero.) A deviation from the line of flight by angular motion about the normal axis of an airplane.
Yawmeter. (Aero.) An instrument.for measuring the angle of yaw.
Y connection. (Elec.) A branching connetion applied to a three-phase circuit.
Y-connector. A I : 2 connector that allows one signal source to be split and routed to two different inputs. Also called "Y-adapter".
Year ring. (Wood wkg.) Also called ."growth ring", or "annual ring". Rings of tubes or cells by means of which the sap is conveyed throughout a tree. they are clearly visible on a cross section of a log. Each ring represents a year of growth.
Yellow. (Color) Primary color between red and green in the spectrum.
Yellow brass. (Metal.) An alloy of 70 parts copper and 30 parts zinc. It is an inferior alloy used where strength is not essential.
Yellow ocht;r. (Paint.) A colour derived from t~e earth mineral ocher, an ore of iron; used as a pigment in paints.
Yellow pine. (Wood) An evergreen of two principal varieties, long leaf and short leaf. The wood of the
. long-leaf pine is dense, heavy, and very strong; mostly used in the form of heavy timbers. The shortleaf pine is brittle, not nearly so strong, and is less expensive; used for studding, joists, cheap flooring, etc.
Yew. (Wood) A slow-growing, medium-size evergreen tree. The wood is close grained, hard, and flexible. Its colour is orange red to brown.
Yield point. (Engin.) That unit stress at which the specimen begins to stretch without increase in the load.
Yield strength. (Engin.) The load requirej to produce a permanet. stretch or elongation of a meterial.

Yield value. (Plast.) The lowest pressure at which a plastic will flow. Below this pressure the plasric behaves as an elastic solid; above this pressure as a viscous liquid.
Yoke. (Arch.) The horizontal top member of a window frame. (Tel.) A setof coils used around the neck of an electronic camera or picture tube to produce the horizontal and vertical deflection of the electron beam.
Young's modulus. (Meek. Engin.)Same as modulus of elasticity.
